American Heart Association Health Care Provider (BLS) CPR Certification
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification through the American Heart Association as a Health Care Provider/Basic Life Support (BLS) is required for attending clinical courses. To facilitate meeting this requirement, Galen provides its students with the opportunity to complete the required CPR course for healthcare providers on site.
Clinical Learning Laboratory Open Practice
Scheduled open session hours in the Clinical Learning Laboratories are available for students to practice their skills as needed prior to the Competency Performance Examinations. During the open session hours, nursing faculty are available in the laboratory to assist students and ensure proper use and effective learning of the simulation mannequins and supplies.
Examination Preparation and Remediation
Galen provides remediation resources and services through Evolve Learning System in connection with administering the HESI examinations. The HESI examinations are nationally normalized nursing exams designed to measure students’ readiness for the NCLEX examination. Students are able to access remediation materials for every test item they answered incorrectly, providing customized remediation and study material to improve their success on the final comprehensive exit examination.
Library Services
The Library/Learning Resource Center is open to all enrolled students; Galen also has extensive online library resources for students. Reference services, as well as orientation and training, are provided at each campus by trained librarians or library assistants during campus library hours. Reference services are available to assist users with all services: searching databases, assistance in identifying and using specific research materials, structuring research projects, offering individual and group instruction, and offering general advice in using the library. In addition, research help is also available online at the Galen Library website with tips and strategies and database tutorials. Online students may request assistance by completing an online form or emailing .
Orientation
A mandatory, on-campus orientation program is held to familiarize all students, including online students, with the program and services provided by Galen. Students are greeted in orientation by an Admissions Representative, the individual who walks students through the process of applying and being accepted into the program. During orientation, students have an opportunity to meet the program director, faculty members, staff and other students. Orientation is an essential part of the Galen education; therefore, every student must attend orientation or make arrangements for an orientation prior to starting classes.
Personal Counseling
Galen is committed to helping students progress successfully through the academic challenges in its nursing programs. A professional, licensed counselor is available to students, at no cost, to provide confidential guidance for a wide variety of personal issues, such as test anxiety, learning struggles, interpersonal conflict, family struggles, depression, and anxiety.
Students with Disabilities
Galen complies with all state and federal laws concerning individuals with disabilities, and provides reasonable accommodations to individuals with disabilities in accordance with applicable laws. Any applicant or student who wishes to request an accommodation may do so by contacting the Section 504/Title IX Coordinator. Any individual who has a concern about an accommodation, or about discrimination or harassment based on a disability, should report his or her concern using the procedures described in Galen’s Equal Opportunity, Discrimination and Harassment policy. Galen also encourages employees, applicants and students to notify Galen of any threat to health or safety, including where as a result of an individual's disability there is a "direct threat" as defined by applicable law.
Student Resource Center
Galen has made a significant commitment to enhancing computer technologies at its campuses and making these services user-friendly for students. Computer resources are available on all campuses for student use. In addition to computer terminals, printing and copying resources are also available. In addition, all campuses have full wireless access for students to use their personal laptops.
