Carrie Lenburg

Dr. Lenburg is a national consultant to nursing and health care institutions and organizations interested in facilitating competency-based education and assessment to promote quality patient care. She developed the Competency Outcomes and Performance Assessment (COPA) Model based on three decades of work with faculties throughout the USA and abroad. This model provides a structured framework designed to organize learning and performance evaluation focused on outcomes and the core competencies required in practice. For its first 17 years, Dr. Lenburg directed the pioneering work at the New York Regents External Degree Nursing Programs (now Excelsior College).

Currently, she is an ongoing consultant to Galen College of Nursing. During the last decade she has worked with faculties of the University of Memphis (as Loewenberg Chair of Excellence), King College, the University of Colorado Health Science Center, Spalding University, Uniformed Services University for Health Sciences, New York University, and the National Council for Nursing Education and HRSA. She earned degrees from Case Western Reserve University and Columbia University, an honorary degree from Spalding University, and has awards from Case Western Reserve University, New York State Nurses Association, NLN’s Linda Richards Award, and Teacher’s College, Columbia University. She is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and was inducted as a Living Legend in 2007; she also was inducted in the same year as a fellow in the NLN’s Academy of Nursing Education. She writes and speaks extensively on these and related topics and on innovative alternative education programs.
