Admission to Galen

Admission into the nursing programs is selective and based upon available facilities and resources in the community and within Galen. The Program Director will make selections into the program after reviewing the recommendations of the Admissions, Progressions, & Graduation Committee.

Admission Requirements

To be considered for acceptance into Galen, an applicant must meet these requirements:

  1. Submit a completed application and pay the application fee;
  2. Be able to communicate effectively in English;
  3. Be a graduate of a high school or hold a high school equivalency certificate (GED); submit all official post-secondary transcripts if requesting evaluation of transfer credit.
  4. Applicants have the option of submitting an official transcript reflecting an ACT composite score of 19 or an SAT composite score of 1350; or passing the pre-admissions test (Career Program Assessment Test - CPAT) with a minimum composite score of 162. For SAT scores taken prior to March 2005, the composite score must be at least 920. ACT/SAT scores must be within the last five years;
  5. The applicant may be required to complete an interview with a recommendation for admission.

Additional Admission Requirements for the LPN to RN Program

In addition to the above requirements, applicants to the RN Program must also meet the following criteria:

  1. Provide proof of current, active, unencumbered LPN licensure, unless application is within three months of graduating from Galen’s LPN program.
  2. GPA of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale from LPN studies.
  3. Non-Galen LPN graduates may be requested to provide official transcripts documenting all previous post-secondary work.
  4. LPN applicants graduating from a school other than Galen may be required to validate comparable LPN requirements. Faculty may validate using nationally normed tests and clinical competency requirements.
  5. Non-Galen LPN graduates may be required to submit two letters of recommendation from practicing RNs or former instructors.

Admission Process

  1. An interview may be scheduled with the applicant upon receipt of a formal or informal transcript and upon the applicant's provision of the ACT/SAT scores described above, or who pass the entrance examination.
  2. Upon completion of the application process, Galen will consider the applicant's application in totality. Applicants accepted or rejected by Galen will be notified in writing.
  3. After acceptance, the applicant will be responsible for scheduling a timely appointment with the Financial Planning Coordinator to arrange for the payment of tuition, sign the Enrollment Agreement and pay the criminal background check and registration fees. Contact information for scheduling this appointment is included in the acceptance letter.
  4. Once the Enrollment Agreement has been signed and a sequence of courses has been determined, the applicant will now be enrolled as a student and will be required to attend a comprehensive orientation held prior to the first day of classes. The orientation will familiarize the student with campus officials as well as policies and procedures.
  5. Take and pass any challenge examinations necessary to receive credit for prior coursework.

Clinical Attendance Requirements

Applicant must:

  1. Provide evidence of good physical or mental health (through evidence of a physical performed by a licensed healthcare provider);
  2. Provide evidence of meeting Galen ' s immunization requirements;
  3. Provide proof of certification in American Heart Association Health Care Provider (BLS) CPR (Galen will provide information on available classes).
  4. Satisfactorily pass a background check prior to the start of classes.

Documents must be submitted prior to clinical orientation. Failure to submit these documents will prevent participation in clinical courses.
